Picasso's portraits evoke some of the most moving, emotional moments in art. In these portraits, we are able to simultaneously see the happy and the sad, the excited and the solemn, the day and the night. Pablo was such an accomplished artist by the age of 19 that he found it necessary to invent new and innovative ways of working and thinking in order to continue growing as an artist.
In this class we will use Picasso's Cubist' portraits as a vehicle to gather a tool box of skills. Students will create four portraits. One in graphite, one in chalk pastels, one in oil pastels and one in watercolor. In addition, we will need to study the warm and cool colors of the color wheel. For Picasso, each medium dictates HOW an artist works and the images that result.
