Masks of the World (7th - 12th Grade)

The ways in which humans have used masks over the centuries is intriguing. Whether it be the most delicate Egyptian Mummy mask, a bold Korean opera mask, or a Russian gas mask, we see such a deliberate sense of purpose in their design.Children in the United States may be pretending to be their favorite hero using a plastic mask on Halloween, while a dancer in West Africa may be performing a powerful ritual for the village wearing a hand-carved mask made of wood. This class unveils not only the designs and cultural styles of masks worldwide, but the materials and processes to create them. Students will build a plaster form and learn to transform recyclables and found objects into an authentic looking mask suitable for hanging. Principles of Sculpture, Painting, Social Studies, and Literacy combine in this interdisciplinary studio class.
